The Laser Thermometer That Ended My "The Bed Says 60, So It's 60" Era

Every 3D printer tells you a number. The screen says the bed is at 60°C, and you believe it, because what else are you going to do — argue with a machine? So you nudge your first layer settings, you fight the same warping corner for a month, and it never once occurs to you that the number on the screen and the temperature under your part might be two different numbers living in the same house.

They are, by the way. I found this out the way I find out most things, which is by buying a tool to answer a question nobody asked me.

The actual spec sheet part

It is a handheld non-contact infrared thermometer — the point-and-click pistol shape you have definitely seen someone wave at a pizza oven. It reads from -50°C to 500°C (-58°F to 932°F), switches between C and F, and has a laser pointer so you have some idea which patch of the world you are actually measuring. The LCD is backlit, which sounds like a footnote right up until you are crouched behind a printer in a dim garage squinting at a number.

The body is ABS, so it survives being dropped, which I can confirm from research I did not intend to do. It runs on two AAA batteries in a compartment designed by someone who has met human fingers, and it weighs about as much as a phone. There is essentially one button. I cannot overstate how much I have come to appreciate tools with one button.

Why it is actually useful here

Bed temperature is the obvious one. Point it at the middle of the plate, then at each corner, and find out whether your heater is heating evenly or whether the back-left corner has been quietly running ten degrees cold and taking your ABS corners down with it. Do that once and an entire category of warping mystery resolves itself.

It does not stop at the bed, though. Check whether the hot end is anywhere near where the thermistor claims it is. Find the stepper driver running hot before it starts skipping steps forty minutes into a print. Sanity-check the inside of an enclosure. Confirm your PSU is not slowly cooking itself in a corner. Outside the printer room it does the same job on brake rotors, HVAC vents, a soldering iron tip, and whichever mug of coffee you are about to regret.

One honest caveat: infrared readings depend on surface emissivity, so a bare polished aluminum bed will read low and lie to you in a completely different way than your printer does. Stick a bit of matte tape on your measuring spot and the numbers snap back into line.
